Enhanced Recovery After Colo-Rectal Surgeries (ERAS) V.S Conventional Care A systematic review and meta-analysis

Rihaj Mohammed Abdulfattah Al-Abbasi;

Abstract

ERAS programs are not only used in abdominal surgeries, they are also used in cardiothoracic, gynecology, urology, orthopedic, and neurosurgery. Many authors and surgeons worldwide have been adapting this program, also trying to modify it due to its promising outcomes and it’s low damage toit’s continence.
Application of enhanced recovery protocols for elective colorectal surgery resulted in reduced length of stay and overall peri-operative morbidity versus the standard conventional care protocols. Mortality, readmissions, and surgical site infections were almost similar between the protocols. However, the enhanced recovery and standard care protocols assorted across studies in number and combinations of components with few experiments reporting agreement with the protocols. There is no reliable evidence on enhanced recovery components, whether alone or in combination, that they are key to improving patient outcomes. The value of infusing time and resources into applying all of the enhanced recovery elements remains unknown
