The Effect of Early Versus Traditional Oral Hydration on Cesarean Section Postoperative Outcome: Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract


This study was conducted to assess the efficacy of early oral hydration in women undergoing CS on:
1. Acceleration of the return of intestinal movement, passage of flatus and stool.
2. Evaluate the occurrence of post operative nausea and vomiting, post operative pain and abdominal distention.
3. Assess Participants satisfaction and length of hospital stay.
This randomized controlled study was conducted at Ain Shams University Maternity hospital. It included 120 women who underwent uncomplicated Cesarean Section under regional anesthesia, and they were randomly assigned into two groups:
Group I (early oral hydration) "60 women": They received oral fluids (within 1 hour postoperatively), beginning with water. The amounts were according to their needs, intravenous fluids were given besides and till the return of intestinal movements.
Group II (control group) 60 women: these women received water after 6 hours postoperatively.
