Abstract


Our research-work was carried out during the period from April-2001 to April 2002, for determination of different patterns of thyroid diseases managed in our hospital by making a correlation between the clinical evaluation and investigations as thyroid function tests, thyroid sonography, isotope scanning, FNAC and histopathology to help early and rapid diagnosis of thyroid disea.ses. 307 patients, of various ages from 10 years to 65 years and different sexes, 260 females and 47 males were proved to have goitre, complaining of neck swelling which may be the only complaint or may be associated with manifestation of other thyroid diseases.

Patients were subjected to complete history taking, general examination and local examination of the thyroid, determination of thyroid
hormonal profile when indicated, ultrasonography of the thyroid tb all v

patients and thyroid scannmg when indicated. Postopdf tive histopathological stUdy of the removed thyroid tissue in all cases was also done.

Ultrasonographic examination was done for all patients. It differentiated between solid, cystic and solid lesions with cyst formation. Solid lesions was found in 27 patients (67.5%), cystic lesions was found in
9 patients (22.5%) and solid lesions with cyst formation was found in only

4 patients (10%). For those patients.
