Abstract

This work was initiated in an attempt to investigate the effeCt of S. mansoni infection on the hepatic and renal function. Two different infective levels of S. mansoni namely lower level 80 cercariae/mouse and high level 160 cercariae I mouse were used. In addition the possible changes in the liver and renal function under the effect of the broad spectrum schistosomicidal drug, praziquantel
£ was evaluated in both non infected and the infected mice.

The first set of experiments in this thesis is concerned with an investigation of the possible alteration in the liver function. AST, ALT, ALP, T. Bil, T. protein, Albumin, globulin and A/G ratio were determind in mice infected with S. mansoni and compared with those ofthe non infected (control) mice.
The results showed that at lower level of infection (80 cercariae/mouse) a decrease in AST, total protein, albumin and globulin concentrations were observed. At the higher level of infection (160 cercariae I mouse), there were decrease in AST, ALP, total protein, albumin and globulin levels.
