Synthesis and characterization of V2O5-P2O5-Li2O glass for photonic applications

Islam Ibrahim Hussien Mohamed;

Abstract

In the aim of improving the physical properties of phosphate glasses, prepared by the melt-quenching technique, ascending doping of metal oxides was carried out for five samples. The vanadium oxide (V2O5) was added to the explicit system: Vanadium-Lithium-Phosphate [xV2O5-(30-x)Li2O-70P2O5]; with x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 1 and 2 mol%.
The amorphous structure of these glasses was examined by XRD analysis. On the other hand, the bond- structure was investigated structurally through FTIR (Fourier transform Infrared), in the range 400-4000cm-1. The results confirm the transforming of (V2O5) into (V2O3 at 494 cm-1) and (VO2 at 973cm-1).
For optical examination, the recorded reflectance and transmittance were studied over the range from 200 to 2500 nm for the five samples. The two parts of the calculated refractive indices are estimated via an analytical technique.
The dispersion parameters, such as Sellmeier gap energy based on Wemple and DiDomenico model, dispersion energy, as well as Abbe’s number were deduced. From the obtained results, the parameters for absorption dispersion, namely, the optical energy gap for indirect transition as well as the Urbach energy, were extracted.
