STUDY OF EFFECT OF SOME FOODS WHICH CONTAINS SULPHUR ON DIABETIC RATS
Ayman Yakout Mohamed Abo Shadie;
Abstract
This study aimed to find out the effect of garlic, onion, and radish on blood glucose, insulin and cholesterol, besides estimation of suitable amount that must be consumed.
The studied materials consisted of three foods; aged garlic and white parts of green onion and radish. All food items have been bought from a local market freshly and prepared for chemical analysis.
Biological (animal) experiment:
1 -Animals :
Forty-eight adult Sprague-Dawely white male albino rats wistar strain seven weeks old weighing 75 g were used in the study.
Diabetes was induced in normal healthy male albino rats by intra peritoneal injection of alloxan 150 mg/kg body weight, according to the method described by (Desai and Bhide, 1985}. Fasting blood samples were obtained by retro orbital method to estimate fasting serum glucose. Rats having •fasting serum glucose more than 190 mg/ dl were considered diabetics (NDDG, 1994).
2- Diets:
Standard diet was prepared per 100 g according to AIN, (1993). The diet had the following composition: cornstarch 70, 5%; corn oil 10%; salt mixture 4 %; vitamin mixture 1%; DL -methionine 0.3% and choline
• chloride 0.2%. The protein was added at 12% level at the expense of starch according to AIN, (1993).
