Abstract

Cyclosporin (Sandimmune) is a unique, powerful immunosuppressive agent of fungal origin. Cyclosporin represents the first of a new generation of immunosuppressive agents that have a potent immunosuppressive properties but with low myelotoxicity.

It has a major impact on organ transplantation and significantly improved graft survival rates but with some adverse effects. The most important of these are nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity as well as gastro-intestinal and neurological troubles.

Our aim of this study was to evaluate the side effects of this drug on the different cell components of the pancreas.

In the present study 60 adult male albino rats with a body weight 150-200 gm were used. They were divided into two main groups:

- The first group (Control group) : included 12 rats used to study the normal histology and ultrastructure of the pancreas.

- The second group (experimental group) : Included 48 rats used for experimental study.

This group was again subdivided into the following groups :

Group A : Included 18 rats, which were given cyclosporin, orally, as 5 mg/200gm I rat/daily for 2,4 and 6 weeks so it was
