The Effect of Different Surface Treatments on the Bond Strength of Ultra-Translucent Zirconia to Different Resin Cements
Yasmine Samy Hammad;
Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments which were sandblasting with glass beads, sandblasting with alumina and application of silica containing material on shear bond strength between ultra-translucent zirconia and two different types of resin cements which were conventional resin cement and phosphate containing resin cement.
Ultra-translucent zirconia plates (12.5 mm width x 12.5 mm length x 3.5 mm thickness) were prepared by cutting bruxizer anterior block using a diamond disk mounted on Isomet 4000 microsaw. The plates were finished using silicon carbide paper 400 grit.
Three different surface treatment techniques were applied to the surface of the ultra-translucent zirconia plates in this study. These techniques were sandblasting with glass beads, sandblasting with alumina and the application of silica containing material. In sandblasting with glass beads, the surface of the ultra-translucent zirconia plate was bombarded with glass beads particles resulting in surface roughness and coating the surface with silica. In sandblasting with alumina, the surface of the ultra-translucent plate was bombarded with alumina particles. In application of silica containing material to the plate surface, filtek Z350 XT flowable composite that contains silica and zirconia nanofillers and nanoclusters was applied. The three techniques were applied to presintered ultra-translucent zirconia (before sintering).
On sample from each group was examined for surface morphology using SEM and elemental surface composition using EDX.
Silane coupling agent was applied on all silica coated ultra-translucent zirconia plates for one minute. Then, the plates were dried for 10 seconds with oil\water free compressed air. Small transparent tubes were cut from
