Hala EL-Said Metwally Hamooda;

Abstract

Schistosomiasis has been • considered a. great socioeconomic problem in Egypt. The brunt of this parasitic disease falls on the liver which is the main organ of intermediary metabolism. Although hepatocellular derangement is minimal, many metabolic changes have been frequently encountered ic. patients with schistosoma! hepatic fibrosis (SHF).
Abnormal carbohydrate and lipid metabolism are among those metabolic disorders. Glucose intolerance, hyperinsulinemia and dyslipidemia have been found to be the common sequlae of schistosoma! hepatic fibrosis.
The aim of the present study was to have insight into the level of advanced glycated endproducts and also the activity of antioxidant enzymes in schistosoma!hepatic fibrosis and to elucidate the relationship between their changes and the severity of the disease. The present work included human, and animal studies.
