ADVANCED LAPAROSCOPIC PROCEDURES

Wafik Wageeh Abd El Rahman;

Abstract

Georg Killing, was the first to examine the abdominal cavity with an endoscope (Talamini, 1993). Since then the laparoscope is rocking the foundations of our institutions and changing every branch of general surgery (O'Rourke, Heald, 1993).

The advent of laparoscopic cholecystectomy led to the most rapid and impressive dissemination of knowledge the international surgical community has ever seen and has prompted many stunning advances (Berci et at., 1991).
Of course the laparoscopic approach also holds some dis-advantages. It

can also be a source of errors and accidents if put in the hands of physicians without proper training and the proper spirit of continuous attention to all the technical details indispensable for total safety (Palmer,
1992).

Special care should be taken in patients whose clinical problems is complicated by factors that may be exacerbated by the requirements of adequate laparoscopy. These are contraindications of laparoscopy, they should dissuade the experienced surgeon operating under optimal conditions from performing a procedure which may save even the compromised patient the increased risk of laparotomy (Scott et al.,1970).
