"Applicability of a Mathematical Equation in Tooth Size Prediction in Mixed Dentition in a Sample of Egyptian Adolescents with Cleft Lip and/or Palate" A Retrospective Study

Muhammad Ahmed Helmi Barghouth;

Abstract

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) disorders are regarded as one of the most common birth defects with multiple detrimental medical, social and psychological effects on both the patients and their families. They result from lack of fusion between embryonic processes resulting in discontinuity of the facial structures with esthetic and functional impairment.

Subsequently, individuals with CLP suffer from hindered maxillofacial growth, as well as speech abnormalities, deglutition difficulties, hearing loss and recurrent ear infections. These esthetic and functional abnormalities require surgical, nutritional, dental, speech and medical interventions with resultant increased financial burden.(1)

Moreover, individuals with CLP present with multiple dental and orthodontic anomalies that further complicate their rehabilitation. These anomalies include tooth size and morphological alterations as well as alterations in arch dimensions in comparison to non-cleft individuals.(2,3)
