Abstract

This study was designed to compare the new local anaeshtetic drug ropivacaine with an established and well known drug bupivacaine as regards to their sensory, motor and animal study on intact animal and isolated organs to compare the cardiovascular effect of therapeutic and large dose of ropivacaine and bupivacaine. We used in this study a concentration of 0.5%, 0.75% and 1% for ropivacaine and 0.5% and
0.75% for bupivacaine.

The patients included in this study was 200 patients, and was divided into two main groups :
Group I, included 100 patients for epidural study and group !1 included 100 patients for spinal study, meanwhile, each group subdivided
into subgroups (20 patients in each) according to drug concentrations.
•,

These patients were presenting for surgery of the lower abdomen, pelvis or lower extremities.

In epidural study the dose of both drugs was calculated according to body index, age and height of the patient, the dose was ranged from
12-20 mh, while in spinal study the drug dose was 3m! for each drug concentration the sensory blockade characteristics for each subgroup were recorded and evaluated by pinprick test every 2 min to detect onset as well as the heighest level of sensory blockade and duration of sensory analysis.
