Abstract
Preoperative hypotony influences favourably the course and decreases the number of complications of cataract surgery.
To achive satisfactory level of preoperative hypotony, several teclmiques and medications was described. This study was planned to evaluate and compare topical CAls and beta blockers in lowering I.O.P prior to cataract extraction.
This clinical prospective study was carried out on 1 00 eyes of 75 patient who were submitted to senile cataract extraction in Ophthalmology Department of Assiut University hospital. Of these patients 54 were males and 21 were female and their ages ranged from 51-73 years. The patients were divided to 4 groups, each group included 25 eyes.
Group (1) received topical CAls, dorzolamide Hcl 2%, 8 hours and 2 hours prior to cataract extraction.
Group (2) received topical beta blockers, tirnolol maleate 0.5%, 8 hours and 2 hours prior to cataract extraction.
Group (3) received both dorzolamide Hcl 2% and tirnolol maleate
0.5%, 8 hours and 2 hours prior to cataract extraction.
Group (4) received topical saline 8 hours and 2 hours prion to cataract extraction.
The mean percent reduction in I.O.P from unmedicated base line I.O.P
immediatly prior to cataract extraction was 30.39% in group treated
