The role of MRI in assessment of acromial morphology in association with rotator cuff tear
Taha Kamal Hussein Abdelmegeed;
Abstract
The aim of this study to evaluate the morphological characteristics of different acromial shapes in association with rotator cuff tears using magnetic resonance imaging.
This study included 40 patients divided equally into two groups namely the case group with RCT and control group with no RCT. 19 were males while the other 20 were females. Their ages were 20-69 years old with the mean age of 45. Cases were selected from the Radiology department of Ain Shams University Hospital.
On MRI, acromial shapes are better recognized by using the mathematical classification scheme for MR images obtained just lateral to the acromioclavicular joint. Our findings highlighted the morphological characteristics of different acromial shapes which may have value in diagnosing and treating subacromial pathologies. Type III acromion was encountered in most of the patients with rotator cuff tear; thus it may be a risk factor leading to the tear. Type I was the most frequently seen among the control group with no RCT.
