Abstract
Phytochemical and Biological Studies of Certain Plants Belonging to Family Fabaceae
Family Leguminoseae (Fabaceae) comprise about 19,325 species classified into 727 genera. Sophora is one of various genera in the Fabaceae family with 52 species. More than fifteen species of this genus played an important role for the traditional Chinese medicine.
The genus Sophora possesses many biological and pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, anti-microbial, antidiabetic, cytotoxic, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities.
Although, many studies carried out on many species of this genus and have generated immense data about the chemical composition and corresponding biological activity of extracts and their isolated compounds, there are still a lot to be explored. To the best of our knowledge, no recent phytochemical studies and little biological studies were found in the available literature for S. secundiflora and S. tomentosa, moreover, detailed information concerning the macro- and micromorphology of the different organs of the plant are lacking.
This initiated our interest to perform the present work which includes:
Part (I): An in-depth comparative macro- and micro morphological study of the stems and leaves of two Sophora species, viz S. secundiflora and S. tomentosa was done. Moreover, a comparative genetic study was done, in which the DNA of both species was extracted from leaf samples and analysed using 11 decamer random primers which will help in further standardization and quality control studies.
