EVALUATION OF MAINTENANCE PERITONEAL DIALYSIS AMONG PATIENTS WITH .I END-STAGE RENAL DISEASE IN ALEXANDRIA

YOUSSREYA MOHAMMED IBRAHIM;

Abstract

Peritoneal dialysis is one of the available end-stage renal disease treatments. Peritoneal dialysis has been known since 1923. It has been submitted to major developments in the late 1960s but remained lacking popularity. The introduction of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPO) in the mid 1970s increased the worldwide acceptance. of peritoneal dialysis. CAPO is a portable, internal, .continuous, essentially steady-state
dialysis system utilizing a dialysis_ solution compartment
'

and peritoneum as a dialysis membrane.

It offers several

advantages as adequacy of dialysis, sodium balance and some psychosocial considerations. Peritonitis represents its main disadvantage and the principal cause of its failure.

Because it depends mainly on the patient selection and on training, a health education program is a must in the success of CAPO.

Health education concerns all those experiences of an individual, group or community that influence beliefs, attitudes and behaviors with respect to health, as well as the process and efforts of producing change when necessary
