Effect of Tomato and Guava juices on Oxidative Stress in Diabetic Rats after Strenuous Exercise
Esraa Abdallah Anwar Sayed;
Abstract
The present study was carried out to investigate the oxidative stress which play an important role in the pathogenesis of numerous degenerative and chronic diseases. Some antioxidants in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) and guava (Psidium guajava) juices were found to have a powerful antioxidant effect. Fifty six adult male albino rats were used to compare the effect of tomato and guava juices on oxidative stress in diabetic rats after strenuous exercise. This study found that, vitamin C and zinc in guava fresh fruit juice were higher than it tomato counterpart. On contrast, vitamins A and E in fresh tomato juice were higher than guava counterpart. The higher concentration of total antioxidant capacity, phenolic compounds and total flavonoids were found in the guava juice than tomato juice. Guava and Tomato juices are more effective in lowering blood sugar as well as serum total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL-c.While, HDL-c levels has been increase for all treated groups. All treated groups with Guava and Tomato juice tended to have the same results for atherogenic index (AI) and CVD Risk factor. It should be noted that, guava juice is more effective than tomato juice in impairment of oxidative damage caused by strenuous exercise leading to significant decrease in serum after exercise comparing with tomato juice.
