Abstract

Recent advances in computer technology in hardware and software has given motive for developing a comprehensive program package for performing surveying and geodetic tasks

of computation and drawing.

The purpose of this thesis is to introduce a comprehensive collection of surveying and geodetic useful programs enclosed into one main package (SURVEYI). The programs included in this package can be classified into two main groups.

Group (I) is concerned with adjustment of horizontal control networks which will perform the adjustment and answer the questions of accuracy in positioning of new stations by different methods, namely, Triangulation, Trilateration, Hybrid, Intersection, and Resection using the adjustment technique by indirect method of least squares (variation of coordinates). adjustment of vertical control networks by indirect method ofleast squares, adjustment of both connecting and closed traverses by Bowditch or coordinate methods , calculation of area of closed polygons by coordinate method, adjustment of traverse networks by direct method of least squares ( condition equations ) , and fmally representing a topographic surface on a contour map using the method of moving surface for interpolation of digital
terrain models (DIM ) and nonlinear interpolation (molecules) for rectangular grid.

Group ( II ) deals with the aspects of 2-dim coordinate transformation , conformal map projections , and geodetic computations . The first aspect, 2-dim coordinate transformation, uses least squares method, the second one, conformal map projection, includes Mercator, Transverse and Universal Transverse Mercator, Stereographic, and Lambert projections. For each type of projection, direct and inverse transformation for sphere or spheroid, calculation of scale factor and convergence at required point are performed. The final aspect, geodetic computations, includes the following topics: Transformation of conventional terrestrial coordinate system into local geodetic one and computation of the reduced observations
• (ellipsoidal azimuth, vertical angle, slant distance), Computation of geodetic elements
