DIGITIZED DENTAL RADIOGRAPHS AS A DIAGNOSTIC AID IN PERIODONTICS

Hafez Mohammed Hafez Diab;

Abstract

The current investigation was planned to study the effect of in vitro variations in the projection geometry , lesion size
I and lesion site on the accuracy of interpretation of both
conventional and digital radiographs . Also to determine

I whether the diagnostic performance of
I radiographs could be improved over that

digitized dental obtained by the

conventional radiographs .The material of this study consisted

I.,

of 20 dry human mandibles which were mounted on a special

mechanical device that was designed to secure a constant
I relationship between the X-ray machine, object and film at

different exposures with a possibility of varying the projection angle in both horizontal and vertical planes . By means of a
I fissure bur, 24 defects were made with varying depths of 1,3
and 6mm at different sites of the mandible . According to the
I lesion site defects were classified into 8 groups . Each group
had 10 exposures at different horizontal and vertical angulations The digitized radiographs were subtracted using
I Saudi & El-Tounsy pixel calculated subttaction radiography
• version2.1, 1995 .
I
Based on conventional and digital image analysis together with the results obtained from ten observers it was
I concluded that :
1- The angle discrepancy is a factor that influences the
I correctness of both conventional and subtraction image
