Study of the relationshp between pyuria and Urinary tract infection

Abstract

Urinary tract infections are a common cause of morbidity and can lead
'
to significant mortality. Careful diagnosis and treatment result in successful

resolution of infections in most instances.

This work aimed to study the relationship between pyuria and urinary tract infection, to isolate the most common organisms causing UTI and to evaluate the rapid screening methods for detection of bacteriuria and pyuria.

The present study included 130 cases (80 males and 50 females) suspected to have urinary tract infections. Their ages ranged from 20-75. The study also included 30 apparently healthy control subjects of matched ages and sex. All of them had no symptoms of urinary tract infections.

All specimens were subjected to chemical analysis by dipsticks, estimation of urine white blood cell count by hemocytometer, direct microscopic examination, gram stained film of uncentrifuged unne, bacteriological culture and identification of the different organisms in cases of true urinary tract infection by conventional tube method and automated method using Sensititre.

Significant relationship between age and recurrent UTI was observed in this study, P < 0.001. This may be attributed to decreased immunity of elderly people than younger ages.

In this study bacteriuria was more prevalent among females (72.0%)

compared to males (62.5%).

As regard the isolated organisms, E.coli was the most common cause of urinary tract infection (41.1%) followed by Klebsiella spp. (14.4%), Pseudomonas spp. (11.2%), coagulase positive staphylococcus (8.8%)
