The Effect of a Suggested Program in Oral English and Communicative Teaching Skills on the Acquisition and Performance of Non-Specialist Teachers of English in these Skills in the Primary Stage

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of a suggested program in, English oral and communicative teaching skills, on the acquisition and performance of non-specialist teachers (NSTs) of English in these skills. The sample of the study involved twenty-five EFL non­ specialist's in nine primary schools in the Cairo Governorate. Four directional hypotheses were formulated regarding the positive treatment effects of the program on both acquisition and performance in the oral and communicative teaching skills in English. A training program was administered to the trainees for about two months from March, 2nct 2002 to April, 30th 2002. The one-group experimental design with pre-post evaluation was employed. Statistical analyses of the data indicated that the pre-post treatment effects were statistically significant at the 0.01 level for both acquisition and performance skills. It was concluded that training non-specialist teachers of English was significantly increased as a result of exposure to intensive planned and systematic instruction in both English and communicative teaching skills. Therefore, the suggested program is said to be effective in developing the trainees' English oral and communicative teaching skills.
