ANORECTAL MOTILITY STUDY IN DIABETIC PATIENTS

Bassem Faris Mina;

Abstract

Gastrointestinal motility disorders are common in diabetes mellitus, and include fecal incontinence, constipation and impaired gastric emptying.

Although many studies were done to explain the
, pathogenesis of fecal incontinence, the results sill controversial.

So, we aimed in this research to study the gastrointestinal motility in diabetic patients complicated with fecal incontinence, and to detect any correlation between fecal
incontinence and autonomic neuropathy.

In this study we found that, the fecal incontinence in diabetic patients developed due to;

(1) Motor dysfunction of autonomic innervation of internal anal sphincter as indicated by low resting and squeezing pressure of internal sphincter in incontinent diabetics with autonomic neuropathy in comparison with the control group.

(2) Sensory response of internal anal sphincter was impaired indicated by significantly higher sensory threshold in incontinent diabetics with autonomic neuropathy in
relation to the control group.
