STRUCTURAL AND GEOPHYSICAL STliDIES AROUND THE ABU RA\VASH DISTRICT, SOUTH\VEST CAIRO, NORTHERN EGYPT
ESSAM ELDIN MOHAMED AHMED EL KHOLIFY;
Abstract
The Abu Rawash area is located to the southwest of• Cairo. and is geologically significant because of its surface exposure of l :ppn C'rctaeeous rocks . It can be used as a stratigraphic and structural mndcl
fur the w'estern Desert .
atuan rocks
The exposed composite stratigraphic section includes L. Cemlm Turonian . Senonian , M & U Eocene , Oligocene and Quatemary
whereas subsurface stratigraphic section includes Basement .
l'nleozoic. Jurassic . L. Cretaceous and L. Cenomanian .
The structure of the Abu Rawash area is complex ''ith frequent folding and faulting . The faults dissect different rock units of dirterent ages . They are classified mto three categories , nonnal . re,•erse. and wrench faults Both surface and subsurface data indicate . that llowcr structure are exist 111 the study area these structures arc commonly associated with wrench faulting . The study area. is als\l characterized by heterogeneous fold styles with different directions . The folds are plunging anticlines and synclines oriented in a NE direction
except Tell El Mabsuta folds which plunge to the WNW . The E
trending folds are matching with Svrian Arc system of folds.
