Abstract


The thyroid gland is one of the largest endocrine organs, it's main function is the production and secretion of
thyroid hormones T4, T3. The principal role of these hormones is to regulate tissue metabolism.

The understanding of the normal physiology of the thyroid gland during pregnancy is necessary to appreciate the

I pathophysiology of thyroid disorders in pregnancy. The normal pregnant woman is considered to be euthyroid, but the hormonal

changes and metabolic demands of pregnancy result in complex changes in thyroid function to maintain this.



The aim of this work is to study the functional activity of the
t maternal thyroid gland throughout pregnancy.

The present study was conducted on 30 healthy normal pregnant women. There ages were ranged between 20-40 years. They had no history of thyroid disease, thyroid therapy or thyroid surgery, presenting to the ante-natal clinic, El-Shatby hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University.
