Triiodothyronine levels in breast fed infants versus animal milk and formula fed infants

Abstract


In this study serum T3 concentration was compared in breast fed, animal fed and formula fed infants, aged 3 to 12 months. 15 Infants for each type of feeding were studied. All were healthy infants with normal weight for their ages. Serum T3 was significantly greater in the breast fed infants, 2.38 ± 0.62 ng/ml (P < 0.001), in comparison with the animal milk fed infants 1.20 ± 0.60 ng/ml and the formula fed infants 0.52 ± 0.45 ng/ml. Results are explained and discussed.
