ORAL FINDINGS IN A GROUP OF EGYPTIAN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS AT END STAGE RENAL DISEASE EITHER ON HAEMODIALYSIS OR AFTER KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION: A CROSSSECTIONAL STUDY
Rahma Ali Saber Ali;
Abstract
Chronic kidney disease is a public health problem with a high impact on the quality of life. The prevalence of CKD worldwide is nearly 11%, which is responsible for nearly 2.4 million deaths. Oral diseases are more prevalent in people with ESRD due to the underlying pathology and its treatment. In children, it can elicit a wide spectrum of oral manifestations, including saliva changes, mucosal lesions, oral infection, gingivitis, and dental anomalies (mostly hypoplasia). However, attention to oral health care has been lacking, especially in developing countries with a higher burden of renal diseases. This cross-sectional study was conducted to assess some oral findings among a group of Egyptian pediatric patients at end- stage renal disease either on hemodialysis or after kidney transplantation to decrease all the possible risk factors and maintain proper management for all oral problems.
This cross-sectional study was carried between April 2019 and October 2019 on 84 pediatric patients under dialysis therapy and patients who renal transplantation during follow up attending El- Mounira children's hospital (Abu El Rish Hospital). In the current study, assessment of oral health was obtained by clinical examination of dental caries, enamel hypoplasia, gingival hyperplasia, and candida infection of oral mucosa by using specific indices. The demographic data, medical and dental history were collected for each subject through a questionnaire. The data were statistically analyzed; continuous variables were expressed as the mean ± standard deviation & median (range), and the categorical variables were expressed as a number (percentage).
