Abstract
Summary
There has been a growing recognition of the influence of genetic factors in human disease. The appreciation of the importance of inherited components of common diseases, congenital malformations, and cancer has increased substantia11y in recent years.
The information gained from the human genome project and related genetic research will undoubtedly create significant changes in health care practice. It provides an overview of basic genetic concepts inc1uding inheritance patterns of single gene conditions, pedigree construction, chromosome aberrations, and the multifactorial basis underlying many common diseases of adulthood.
The mam feature of clinical genetics is the involvement of close relatives in the diagnosis of a hereditary disorder, and possible consequences of the findings for future generations.
Our study aimed at finding out the prevalence of various groups of genetic disorders in our Genetics Clinic, Pediatric Department, Ain Shams University, and classify them etiologically.
The study was designed to be a retrospective, longitudinal study by reviewing of the medical records of all patients attended the Genetics Clinic, Children's Hospital, Ain Shams University during a period of 10 years from 1989 to 1998.
