Predictive Value of Serum β-hCG for Early Pregnancy Outcomes among Women with Recurrent First Trimesteric Spontaneous Abortion

Souad Mohammed Abd Elsalam;

Abstract

ecurrent pregnancy loss is one of the most difficult problems in reproductive medicine.
HCG is the hormone that produced in pregnancy, secreted by developing embryo soon after conception and later by the syncytiotrophoblast.
Level of HCG can be detected in the blood or urine which is the base of the pregnancy test. The serum test can detect BhCG levels starting from 5 mIU/ml and measure quantitative titer. HCG is detectable in the blood of pregnant women at 10 days after fertilization. HCG levels greatly increase during early pregnancy, the level become double approximately every 48 hours.
Serial studies were concerned with the importance of BHCG in the prediction of pregnancy outcome especially in women with history of recurrent abortion or women undergo with IVF. Most of them found that BHCG is very important in prediction of successful pregnancy outcome either alone or when combined with others like progesterone and CA 125 with different cutoff values that predict successful pregnancy outcome.
