REUSE OF TREATED SEWAGE WATER UNDER SPRINKLER AND DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEMS

Abstract


ABSTRACT
This study aims to investigate the possibility of reusing the treated sewage water under both sprinkler and drip irrigation systems. The study was divided into two main experiments; one was irrigated by treated sewage water, while the other was irrigated by fresh Nile water. Each was divided into four individual plots have the same area. Four tested systems of irrigation were constructed in each experimental. These systems are rotary sprinkler irrigation system, spray sprinkler irrigation system, subsurface drip irrigation system with long path emitter and subsurface irrigation system (leakage pipe) with wet strip pattern.
For that purpose the study focused on the hydraulic performance parameters of the applied irrigation systems, which were distribution uniformities (DU), Christiansen's coefficient of uniformity (CU), application efficiency (Ea) and over lapping , The impacts of applying sprinkler and drip irrigation systems and types of irrigation water on soils characteristics by using the following indicators: soil moisture distribution, salt distribution and movements, chemical properties, and rate of growing of the landscape plant also focused on impact of irrigation water quality on the plant specially concentration of heavy metals.
The obtained results can be concluded that:
1. Subsurface drip system saved the applied monthly water and consequently the total seasonal water application with both Nile and treated sewage water
2. Maximum value of both crop water requirement (ETc), and field water supply (FWS) for Bermuda grass was recorded in July.
3. Reusing of treated sewage water in irrigation can be used successfully with sprinkler irrigation systems and sub surface drip irrigation systems as a result of its uniform distribution of moisture
