Abstract

ABSTRACT
A projection is required to transfer measurements and positions from the spheroid onto a flat surface suitable for making a map. Projection may be designed to keep certain features, such as area, shape, or azimuth of lines radiating from a central point, but all these characteristics cannot be preserved in a single map. The most desirable type of representation for purposes of local surveys is conformal, which shows the correct angle between any pair of short intersecting lines.
The main purpose of this thesis is searching on the best conformal projection of Syrian area. In order to verify this goal the assessment of the adopted systems in Syria are done and then suggested another orthomorphic projections to minimize the extreme distortions and represent this area in one zone. In addition, it has been done some modifications of applied systems in Syria to improve them. Two modifications are made of stereographic projection, which used for mapping in Syria; (1) changing the current calculation manner with the double projcction technique and (2) treating the gross distortion in boundary points. In transverse Mercator and Lambert conformal projection, which are employed in military purposes, the modification is done for their computational equations as alternative procedure of the tables that are used until time. Moreover, a link between the transverse Mercator and Lambert conformal projection is performed through finding the transformation equations from one to another without referring to a spheroid.
A major part of this research is concerned with conformal transformation of two and three-dimensional coordinates using polynomial models. The coefficients of each model are determined from the data of those points that have known coordinates in both systems, i.e. common stations and using least squares adjustment. In addition,
the least squares adjustment process for 2-D coordinates conversion is used to keep
the scale factor at centre of projection as should be, and to verify the stabilization of distortion around the mapping centre. In three-dimensional coordinates the transformation is normally done through Bursa-Wolf model, to compare with polynomial approach.
