Abstract


Summary
Calcium is one of the important extracellular cation in the body .
constitutes about 20% of body weight, bone contain
over 99% of body Calcium . In plasma, its concentration is 8.5•
10.S mg/di in 3 forms ,ionized, protien bound and chelated.
I ts main function at the myoneural junction where its influx releases the transmitter.
Calcium initiates muscle contraction by binding to troponin C.
In blood clotting process , Calcium acts as a cofactor for the enzyme thrombokinass to convert prothrombin to thrombin .
It is actively absorbed from small intestine controlled by adaptation mechanism and mainly excreted by the kidney . Calcium metabolism is regulated by :
parathormone that increase its plasma level , calcitonin which is Calcium lowering hormone , 1-25 (OH)) D, that increase its plasma level , adrenal glucocorticoid , growth hormone and thyroid hormone .
Hypercalcemia which ts serum Calcium level more than
I O.Smg/dl is mainly caused by hyperparathyrodism. Cancer and hypervitaminosis D , it is manifested by cardiovascular
problems as shortening of the QT interval in ECG. beside the features of the underlying disease
