A Comparative Study of Epidemiology, Clinicopathologic Features and Outcome of Colorectal Cancer Patients between Ain Shams University Hospitals and Luxor International Hospital
Chresteen Talaat Samy Hanna;
Abstract
It was supposed that CRC is more common in young age in Upper Egypt compared to Lower Egypt. It's supposed also that patients in Upper Egypt seek medical advice late.
Colorectal cancer in Egypt has no age predilection with high prevalence between young population, however colorectal cancer in both hospitals in ASU &LIH as a representative region of lower and upper Egypt, respectively has near similar pattern in age, sex distribution, histological type and stages. With mild difference in management modalities and outcomes as illustrated before.
The presence of a relatively high proportion of left-sided preponderance, is a clear indication for the needs for screening & prevention.
Indeed, the consensus among doctors dealing with cancer patients in Egypt supports these observations.
The need to increase awareness about CRC in Egypt especially upper egypt, is recommended. An awareness campaign should be performed to promote detection of CRC at its earliest and most curable stage by recognizing early symptoms and enabling early referrals for colonoscopy. Those at higher risk should be offered more intensive surveillance.
Similarity of the data from different centers suggests that this is the picture of colorectal cancer typical of Egypt.
