Post - traumatic. Carpal Instability

Esam Fahim;

Abstract

The wrist has by far the most complicated anatomy. It is really a system of joints between eight cubical bones connected by ligaments which play an important role in stabilizing the carpus.

: The term carpal instability encompasses many different injury

patterns with varying degrees of severity. Although many classifications
u
exist, there is no one accepted scheme.
\!
Many mechanisms of injury have been detected to explain various intities of carpal instability. Of which, loading of the wrist in hyper extension, hyperflexion injury and inter carpal supination. The approach
to te diagnosis must be systematic. Including the history and physical

examination. Standard radiographs are nearly always required, but advanced imaging modalities e.g. CT and MRI may be helpful.

Conservative treatment is used only in mild sprain of the wrist. But if there is tear of one of the carpal ligament, fracture or fracture• dislocation of one of the carpal bones, surgical intervention is performed.
