Abstract
Thyroid disease is a common condition with varied etiology. Total thyroidectomy is one of modalities of treatment for thyroid disorders; in addition, it is one of the most performed surgical procedures.
One of the most common complications of thyroid surgery is postoperative hypocalcaemia. So this study aimed to compare the incidence of development of hypocalcaemia after total thyroidectomy in patients who underwent total thyroidectomy in Ain-Shams University and Damanhour Medical National Institute.
This retrospective study included the data that were collected from December 2019 to December 2015 from previous files from Ain-Shams University hospitals and Damanhour Medical National Institute under supervision of thesis supervisors. Sixty two patients who underwent total thyroidectomy without nodal dissection were included in the study. Patients unfit for surgery, had extremes of age: <15 years old and >65 years old, did total Thyroidectomy with nodal dissection, had previous other neck surgery, did subtotal thyroidectomy, had abnormal calcium level before surgery or abnormal renal function at time of surgery were excluded from the study.
