Abstract


Delirium is a common complication after major surgical procedures and it is characterised by disturbed consciousness, cognitive function or perception, which has an acute onset and fluctuating course. Postoperative delirium is associated with an increased length of stay in the intensive care unit, long hospital stay, high hospital charges as well as increased morbidity and mortality. However, it can be prevented and treated if dealt with urgently.

This study investigated the prophylactic role of haloperidol supplementation in postoperative delirium in elderly patients of both sexes belonging to American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status I, II and III and undergoing major non- cardiac surgery under general anesthesia.
