Oncoplastic vs Conservative Breast Surgery in Patients with Aggressive Breast Cancer

Gamal Mohamed Gamal Ali Abdalla;

Abstract

To summarize, aggressive breast cancers surgical options has evolved recently where it was proven in our study that oncoplastic breast surgery had the same oncological outcome (loco-regional recurrence) in comparison with conservative breast surgery, in treatment of aggressive breast cancers, with no statistical significance between them both, with a p value >0.05.
Moreover, both operations did not show any significant statistical variations regarding the operative time and the short term complications, as seroma formation (breast or axilla), the integrity of skin flaps, wound infection and scar formation, with a p value >0.05 between the two groups.
But on the other hand, oncoplastic breast surgery had the upper hand regarding the long term cosmetic outcome, with a p value <0.05.
Therefore, based on our results, we conclude that oncoplastic breast surgery technique can be the preferred option for treatment of aggressive breast cancer, in comparison with conservative breast surgery, because it has the same oncological outcome with a better cosmetic outcome.
