Serum Magnesium Level and Inflammation in Obese Medical Students at Ain Shams University
Nevien Fekry Abdallah Hendawy;
Abstract
besity is a complex, multifactorial, but largely preventable health problem. Its pathogenesis is influenced by the elaborate interactions among a complex web of factors. Obesity is regarded as a symptom of energy imbalance. The net positive energy balance because of imbalance between consumed and expended calories is an important underpinning principal of obesity pathogenesis.
The globally expanding obesity increases the risk of developing chronic metabolic disorders that causes an economic and a health burden. In Egypt, obesity is increasing at an alarming rate representing the highest percentage of obesity in Africa.
Low-grade inflammation, a key feature of obesity, is characterized by elevated plasma levels of proinflammatory markers. Low-grade inflammation in obesity is partly a product of the dysregulated white adipose tissue with overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines with interplay between various metabolically active sites as liver and immune cells.
The unhealthy diet consumed by obese individuals has a crucial role in the inflammatory state associating obesity. Deficiency of micronutrients as Mg are closely linked to obesity and its inflammatory process.
