Abstract

AgNPs have been used in many fields as catalysts, textiles, engineering, electronics, optics and most importantly in the medical field as a bactericidal and as a therapeutic agent. AgNPs are taking part in the formulation of dental resin composites, in coatings of medical devices, as bone cement and in many wound dressings. Additionally, AgNPs have been used as an antimicrobial agent in air sanitizer sprays, pillows, respirators, wet wipes, detergents, soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, washing machines and many other consumer products. Although there are various benefits of AgNPs, there is also the problem of nanotoxicity of Ag. There are various studies that suggest that the AgNPs can cause various environmental and health problems.
Toxicity caused by AgNPs thought to be mainly due to generation of ROS and oxidative stresses leading to DNA damage and eventually leading to apoptosis. So, it had been found that one of the mechanisms of removal of the oxidative stresses generated by AgNPs is presence of antioxidants which may act as a protective agent against damage caused by AgNPs through lowering down the ROS level.
