Abstract


Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a common, chronic and metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia as a cardinal metabolic feature. Long-term damage, dysfunction and failure of various organs especially eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels are caused by chronic hyperglycemia of diabetes. The incidence of T1DM is reported to be increasing by 3-5% per year, and the number of people with diabetes is estimated to reach 380 million by 2025.
Diabetic retinopathy is the most frequent complication of diabetes and remains the leading cause of preventable blindness in the working-age population in developed countries.
The aim of this study to detect the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in type 1 diabetic subjects in relation to duration of diabetes, control of blood glucose level and other micro-vascular complications.
This was a cross sectional study conducted on 120 patients attending diabetes outpatient clinic at ain shams university hospital during period from april 2020 to October 2020 to detect the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in type 1 diabetic subjects in relation to duration of diabetes, control of blood glucose level and other micro-vascular complications.
