Association between Vitamin D Deficiency and Anemia in Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease on maintenance hemodialysis

Abstract

Anemia remains οne οf the greatest medical problems in HD patients. Recently,25(OH) vitamin D is found to have an important role in such issue. Sο, the aim οf our study was tοexplοre the extent οf relationship between vitamin D level and anemia in a study included 90 ESRD patients on maintenance HD. Mean age οfthe patients was 51.13 ± 10.44 years with 68 males and 22 females, with medianduration of HD9.5 (6 – 12)years. 32 (35.6%) of the patients were diabetic while 86 (95.6%) of them were hypertensive. Regards the etiology of ESRD, hypertension and diabetes constitue most of the causes as 37 (41.1%) and 32(35.6%) patients respectively. The rest of the causes is represented by lupus nephritis as 4 patients (4.4% ), chronic glomerluonephritis as 4 patients(4.4%), chronic tubuloinerstitial nephritis as 2 patients (2.2%) while ADPKD, hereditary nephritis and amyloidosis were represented by only one patient(1%)for each. Patients with deficient vitamin D level were 24 patients (26.7 %); patients with insufficient levels were 32 patients (35.6%) while patients with sufficient levels were 34 patients (37.8%). There was no statistically significant relation between vitamin D level and sex of the studied cases, their age,duration of HD,diabetes mellitus and hypertension. There was significant positive correlation between vitamin D levels and the level of hemoglobin of the studied cases, calcium and phosphorus levels. There was negative significant correlation between vitamin D levels and serum iPTH levels, serum iron and T.sat(%), while no significant relations found between vitamin D levels and dialysis access,TIBC, serum ferritin and serum albumin levels.
