INTRATHECAL MORPHINE VERSUS FENTANYL FOR CESAREAN SECTION: AN ASSESSMENT OF PAIN RELIEF, SATISFACTION AND SIDE-EFFECTS

Abstract


This study was done at Assiut University Hospital, and the hospital ethical committee approved the study. Patients with Co­
excisting respiratory, cardiovascular diseases, renal or hepatic impainnent

were excluded. Subjects for the study were (60) patients scheduled for elective cesarean section with spinal anesthesia (2.5 - 3 ml of 0.5 % hyperbaric bupivacaine).

The patients were divided into 3 groups. 20 of each.


o The control group (group C): received 0.5 ml saline added to the bupivacaine.

o The Morphine group (group M): received 0.5 mg morphine added to the bupivacaine.

o The fentanyl group (group F): received 15 ).lg fentanyl added to the bupivacaine.

The patients were observed as regards:


• Hemodynamic data (heart rate and blood pressure) heart rate and I mean blood pressure were recorded before, intraoperative (every 2 min lllltil delivery then at 5 min interval lllltil the end of the surgery) and
postoperative every hour up to 24 hours.

• Respiratory rate and oxygen saturation were assisted before,

intraoperative and postoperatively every hour up to 24 hours.
