Abstract

The study highlights the use of Systemic Functional Grammar approach and the use of lexical diversity in teaching year four students the way of writing a narrative story. The data obtained from a sample of 40 students who were the participants of the experiment. 21 of these students represented the experimental group; whereas, 19 students represent the control group. This study tackles the textual metafunction as well as the lexical diversity. The results show that the use of cohesive devices helped in connecting the ideas coherently in a text in an organized way. This is besides the thematic patterns which represent one aspect of achieving cohesion in a text including connecting ideas and, consequently, sentences together smoothly. Yet, the results have shown that lexical diversity remained stable without recording any change or development.
