"Histological, Histochemical and Radiographic Evaluation of the Possible Action of Spirulina Compared to Ginger Against the Irradiation Hazards on the Parotid Gland and Alveolar Bone of Lower Jaw of Albino Rats"

Lobna Mohamed Nabil Abdel Moniem;

Abstract

Radiotherapy has produced a significant increase in cure rates for many malignancies of the head and neck region. However, irradiation can negatively affect normal tissues included in the field of irradiation and result in several undesired reactions that manifest during or after therapy completion.
Interest has risen in the development of potential drugs of plant/herbal origin to overcome radiation effects. Spirulina is a microscopic and filamentous cyanobacterium (commonly called blue- green alga). It possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune- enhancing properties that help in prevention of different disorders that are associated with oxidative stress and inflammation.
Ginger “Zingiber officinale” is a spice and flavoring agent consumed worldwide. It contains various compounds that have antioxidant, anti¬inflammatory and free radical scavenging properties.
So the aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the possible effect of spirulina compared to ginger against the irradiation hazards on the parotid gland and alveolar bone of jaw in albino rats through:
• Histological examination: using hematoxylin and eosin for both parotid and alveolar bone specimens. Also, Masson trichrome stained sections for detection of newly formed collagen in alveolar bone specimens.
