Abstract


Climate responsive designs are widely noted in vernacular and ancient dwellings. In I addition, Energy efficient is finally becoming a mayor item in modem architecture. Due to I ever increasing energy prices and the global warm ing, which is partly a result of the I
energy production, more and more clients are aware of the necessity to reduce the energy I
f consumption in their buildings especially for people used low and middle income level
residential buildings.
The main aim of the study is to evaluate the thenna1 performance of low and middle
i income level housing in all climatic design regions of Egypt in terms of energy I
performance, therm.al comfort and bioclimatic design because of being thought as not I
performing climatically well. To achieve this aim, the study selects two prototypes 1

representing low and middle cost income housing level in Egypt from those recommended !
i prototypes by HBRC (housing and building research centre) to investigate as base cases.
These base cases as existed prototypes in 6th October city are surveyed. In addition,
if detailed questionnaires of these base cases are obtained by the aid of architectural I
department within HBRC (housing and building research centre) in Egypt. Obtained
i information is checked by the research with meeting the people who use these units in 1.
prototypes to check the required schedules for analysis. The objectives of this research are:
i - Check and investigate the availability of different types of climatic data within all
different regions in Egypt.
f - Investigate and put an imagination for a comprehensive climatic design regions
cJassification according to previous attempts using computer aided bioclimatic programs.
f - Identify a comprehensive limited set of the design strategies to use in thc schematic part
of the design process and put encyclopaedic guidelines of bioclimatic and energy conserving design strategies.
- Investigate the effect of the modelling methods on the results of energy performance of
ji residential buildings using advanced computer programs precisely by Ecotect program.
- Investigate the effect of different sources of hourly climatic data for representative cities in all climatic zones in Egypt on the results of energy pcrformance for building.
- Evaluate the energy performance and the indoor thermal comfort of chosen prototypes i
for low and middle income level housing within representative locations of all different I
climatic zones in Egypt.
