Abstract

To evaluate different types of immunoglobulins in cases of S. mansoni infection and their correlation with recent and old infections, sera from patients with recent (25) and chronic schistosomiasis mansoni with hepatosplenomegaly (36) and with ascites (17); from individuals infected with HCV, as
positive controls (15) and from uninfected individuals (20) were analyzed for the presence of anti-SEA immunoglobulins. Both IgM and IgG against SEA using ELISA technique were detected in both recent and chronic schistosomiasis patients, . with higher IgM in recent cases and higher IgG in chronic cases. The IgG, antibodies were detected by ELISA/SEA in
100 % of patients with recent infection, 86.1 % of chronic
uncomplicated and 88.2 % of chronic complicated cases. In addition, the mean optical density values for IgM and IgG, antibodies were statistically higher in the patients with recent disease than in those with chronic disease. No significant difference as regards IgA was found between the different clinical stages of schistosomiasis, The results of this study
show that the use of ELISA with SEA for determination of i
schistosome-specific immunoglobulins especially IgG, can provide a serologic method for sensitive and accurate [ immunodiagnosis of human schistosomiasis followed by IgG
and IgM.
