Antenna Array Systems for 4G/5G Mobile Applications

Osama Mohammad Abd Al-Hameed Dardeer;

Abstract

This chapter presented an interleaved array for 4G/5G mobile base stations and access points at which two or three MMW elements are inserted between two filtennas operating at both microwave and MMW frequency bands. The presented structure can be viewed as 2-element array at 5.2 GHz and non-uniform 5-element array at 28 GHz since the separation between the high band elements is not constant. For the mobile handsets, two configurations are proposed for the MIMO system which can support 4G/5G frequency bands with only 4-ports. A tapered slot decoupling mechanism is adopted for further enhancing the mutual coupling and improving the diversity. Detailed results are presented including the matching, isolation, ECC, and the DG of the proposed MIMO system. The proposed MIMO system exhibits the ability to simultaneously operate at the microwave and millimeter-wave frequency bands using only 4-ports in addition to the simplicity in the fabrication process. Also, the matching and isolation properties are kept within acceptable limits which prove the capability of the tapered slot decoupling mechanism to achieve good diversity performance.
