Fixation of Trochanteric Fracture by Dynamic Hip Screw (DHS) Versus Proximal Femoral Nailing (PFN) (Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis)

Abstract

rochanteric fractures are considered as a major public health problem and can lead to disability, reduced quality of life and increased mortality. Trochanteric fractures in general are affecting around 1.5 million people per year worldwide. This systematic review aims to review the literature for the comparison between treatment options for management of trochanteric fracture (DHS vs. PFN). The advantages and disadvantages of the DHS have been well established in several studies done in the past. Many studies compare the DHS with Gamma nail. Not many studies compare the DHS with Proximal femoral nail (PFN), which is being preferred by many. PFN and DHS are nearly have equal effective in the treatment of trochanteric fractures when comparing the age distribution, hospital stay and the good outcome. But PFN is more prevalent than DHS in mean duration of surgery, mean blood loss during surgery and excellent outcome regarding HHS. More high-quality randomized controlled trials and further studies are needed.
