ROLE OF COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY IN EVALUATION OF GYNECOLOGIC TUMOURS

OSAMA HARITH ABD EL-LATIF;

Abstract

55 women of ages ranged between 35 and 65 years were investigated in this study. Their main problem was the presence of a pelvic or pelvi-abdominal tumour with or without uterine bleeding. Provisional clinical diagnosis of the nature of these tumours was routinely carried out by the Gynecologists of Assiut University Hospital through a thorough pelvic examination (to clarify their uterine or ovarian origin) together with a suplementary collection of procedures including cystoscopy, plain abdominal radiogra• phy, intravenous urography and barium enema examinations to justify the tumour relation to the other pelvic and abdominal organs and tissues.
The c.T. unit of Assiut University Hospital was the place where examination of those women had been carried out over a period of 22 months. This was precieded by routine steps of patient preparation which aimed at the
0pacification of the bowel through-oral administration of
Gastrografin the night before and the morning of the day of examination. A routine scanning technique was applied
where the sections extended from the iliac crest down the
symphysis pubis in axial planes and at a 8 mm. slice thickness except for few cases where high abdominal sec• tions addionally performed to rule out the suspecion of hepatic, mesenteric or para-aortic lymph node metastases for staging purposes.
