Prognostic Utility of Ki67 in Gastric Carcinoma

Naema Mohamed Almabrouk;

Abstract

This retrospective study included fifty cases collected randomly from archival paraffin blocks of gastric carcinoma. All cases had underwent surgical intervention during the period from 2013 to 2018. Sections were prepared from paraffin blocks and the slides were immunohistochemically stained with Ki67 antibody.
The aim of the work is to assess the prognostic value of Ki67 proliferation index and correlate Ki67 expression with the overall survival in patients with gastric carcinoma.
The age of the patients ranged from 31 to 80 years with mean age 53.42±10.44 years. 54% of the patients were above 50 years and 62% of cases were males.
The commonest sites of tumor cases were fundus and body of the stomach representing 50% of all included cases.
The majority of studied cases (86%) were classified histopathologically as intestinal type adenocarcinoma and (58%) were poorly differentiated.
Forty five percent of the cases were penetrating the subserosal connective tissue without invasion of visceral peritoneum or adjacent structures (T3), 64.5% metastasizing to lymph nodes and 56.5% having no distant metastasis. Stage IV was the commonest, representing 43.5% of all cases.
