Evaluation of bite appliance and/or joint space lavage in management of anterior displacement of the disc of temporomandibular joint

Abstract

Twenty patients have been selected for this study complaining from anterior

displacement of the disc of TMJ. The patients were divided into two equal groups. Two types of treatment modalities were performed

group I : 10 patients received soft bite appliance (night guard ) .

$ group 2 : I0 patients treated by arthrocentesis .

The collected data of:

- Maximal interincisal opening

• - pain - protrusion of the mandible

- lateral jaw movement

were carried out pre operative and every 2 weeks for 3 months

Preoperative MRI for every patient in both groups was undertaken.

• In the first group another MRI was performed after 3 months, and in the second group after 3 days to detect any change in the disc position .

Statistical analysis of the results were performed 3 months .

This analysis shows improvement in the both groups, but the improvement in the

2nd group was noticed from the first day after arthrocentesis. The improvement in the I st group took around two weeks to occur. Based on these results, it can be concluded that :
